Dr. Antigone Argyriou Among the First Offering the Intracept® Procedure for Chronic Vertebrogenic Low Back Pain

By March 25, 2024No Comments

The Intracept Procedure is clinically proven to relieve chronic vertebrogenic low back pain.

Spine Medicine & Surgery of Long Island is pleased to now offer the Intracept® Procedure to our patients, an innovative approach for providing relief from vertebrogenic pain, a type of chronic low back pain. Our pain management specialist, Dr. Antigone Argyriou, is among the first physicians in New York offering the Intracept Procedure.

About The Intracept Procedure

The Intracept Procedure for back pain is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure that targets a nerve in the vertebrae called the basivertebral nerve (BVN). During the procedure, Dr. Argyriou advances a specialized probe into the vertebrae and uses radiofrequency energy to heat the BVN, rendering it unable to transmit pain signals to the brain. This treatment takes about an hour to perform at our office and is implant free, preserving the overall structure of the spine.

Though newly approved and available, the Intracept Procedure is based on 30+ years of research. It is also supported by multiple clinical studies, including two Level I randomized controlled trials and five-year data on patient outcomes. Key findings include:

  • Long-term improvements in pain and function, sustained more than five years
  • Sustained decrease in patients using opioids and injections long-term
  • Nearly 80% of patients indicated they would have the procedure again for the same condition
  • Less than 0.3% rate of serious Intracept Procedure-related complications reported.

The Intracept Procedure can help our patients who have suffered chronic low back pain for at least six months, who have not responded to at least six months of conservative care from you spine or pain management specialist and/or at-home back exercises, and present with degenerative vertebral endplate changes consistent with Type 1 or Type 2 Modic changes at L3 through S1 on an MRI.

The Intracept Procedure for New York Residents

Long Island residents interested in the Intracept Procedure for back pain are invited to schedule an appointment with Dr. Argyriou at our offices. Book your consultation and start the journey towards less pain and better mobility.
