Dr. Marissa Catalanotto Publishes New Research on Gender Disparities in Interventional Pain Medicine

Dr. Marissa Catalanotto recently co-authored a newly published research article in Pain Practice examining gender disparities within interventional pain medicine.
The study, titled “Gender Disparities in Interventional Pain Medicine: Representation, Leadership, and Compensation,” analyzed trends in conference representation, academic leadership roles, and physician compensation across major national pain medicine organizations from 2020 through 2024.
Researchers found that women remain underrepresented in national conference speaking opportunities and academic leadership positions throughout the specialty, while compensation disparities between male and female pain physicians continue to persist.
The publication also demonstrated that academic programs led by female directors showed significantly greater female faculty representation, emphasizing the importance of leadership diversity and mentorship within medicine.
In addition to this newly published work, Dr. Catalanotto continues to remain actively involved in ongoing research initiatives focused on education, representation, and advancement within interventional pain medicine.
Her work also reflects the growing emphasis on research and innovation throughout our practice. Alongside ongoing research efforts spearheaded by Dr. Courtney Toombs, our team remains committed to advancing patient care through academic collaboration, clinical research, and continued contributions to the evolving field of pain medicine.
We’re excited to see Dr. Catalanotto contributing meaningful research to the field and look forward to the continued impact of her academic work.
